Email, Wifi, etc.

Even if terms such as email, WiFi or blog are not that old, the IT service centre of our university (ITZ for short) can look back on a short history. The centre has been providing a high-performance IT infrastructure for MLU, its students and staff since 1961. The IT centre's free services for all students are presented in detail on a topic page. Here in brief:

Email

Every student has a personal mailbox with an e-mail address in the format firstname.surname@student.uni-halle.de. This address is used for all electronic correspondence between students and MLU’s staff or representatives. In fact, many central facilities of MLU only accept emails sent to this address and only reply to them. It is therefore important to keep an eye on your own ‘university mailbox’ throughout your studies.

There are two ways to access the e-mails:

The ITZ has written detailed instructions on how to retrieve your student e-mail address using your personal e-mail programme.

Every student receives the login details with their enrolment documents. The assigned password can be changed at any time.

WiFi

Wireless networks are of course also standard at MLU. To login via computer, tablet or smartphone, all you need is your student login details. Then simply follow the instructions at wlan.itz.uni-halle.de. You can change your password at any time via the ITZ service portal. Please note: The connection data is logged for each user!

eduroam

A very special service is ‘eduroam’, which all students can use to access WiFi at various universities throughout Germany: https://www.itz.uni-halle.de/eduroam.

Löwen App

The Löwen app developed by our IT centre is something like an individual overview on timetables, modules, exams, performance status. It also performs a lot of other useful things: Obtaining TAN blocks, displaying the canteen menus, researching in the library catalogue or view and renew borrowed media, displaying site plans, accessing the print portal or (if your smartphone is equipped with NFC technology) reading out your student ID‘s credit balance.

All this is explained in a little more detail on the next page. You may find the app’s download links via https://www.itz.uni-halle.de/dienstleistungen/loewenapp/

VPN

It is also possible to use internal services in distrance from our university network (e.g. library research). AnyConnect clients can be used to dial in from home with the use of a suitable broadband connection.

Antivirus/ firewalls

Ther is no use in ignoring the dangers of viruses or viral attacks. We generally recommended that you only use updated operating systems, programmes as well as antivirus programmes and update your devices regularly.

It is also strongly recommended that you familiarise yourself with IT awareness and be vigilant so that you are aware of any irregularities or anomalies. Numerous warnings in IT Service Centre's incident alert blog show that the dangers are real, including on topics such as email attachments with dangerous content, phishing and (spear) phishing or general security advice.

And please remember: we have not yet found a Nigerian prince who actually has millions of dollars on the high edge and has gladly given them away to ‘you my dear friend’. This ITZ blog post is about password theft, fake emails from real friends and the like.

Blogs

IT service centre also supports students who wish to run their own blog. Are you planning the like? Then simply set those >three steps and get started. All you need is your personal user ID/password, that any student receives with their enrolment. Please mind that a blog may only be edited on the university network or via VPN.

Computer pools

Separate registration for computer pools is no longer necessary. All PC pools have been converted by the system. Simply use the login data sent for enrolment.
