STIBET – Scholarships for International Students and Doctoral Candidates to Promote Equal Opportunity and Recognize Exceptional Commitment

The International Office at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is awarding four-month scholarships for the 2026 summer semester, funded by the DAAD with support from the Federal Foreign Office (AA). The scholarships are intended to support international students and doctoral candidates who face particular individual challenges during their studies (Scholarship for Equal Opportunity) or who are particularly engaged in socio-political and/ or social issues in an international context (Scholarship for Exceptional Commitment).

The deadline for the 2026 summer semester has already passed. As soon as the scholarships for the 2026/27 winter semester have been announced, they will be published here.

Hilde Domin Programm by DAAD

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) administers the scholarship programme “Hilde Domin Programme” with funds from the Federal Foreign Office (AA). The programme serves to support students and doctoral candidates from across the globe, who are at risk of being formally or de facto denied educational or other rights in their country of origin, and to provide these students and doctoral candidates with an opportunity to begin or complete a study or research degree at a higher education institution in Germany. The program is intended exclusively for prospective master’s and PhD students.

General information

General information

The students and doctoral candidates supported under the program receive a scholarship for a course of study of their personal choice and according to their individual qualifications, which covers the necessary costs of the study or research stay (a monthly scholarship rate of currently EUR 992 for Master's students and EUR 1,400 for doctoral students; health, nursing care, accident and personal liability insurance; a travel allowance based on the country of origin or current country of residence; participation in a German language course - two, four or six months - depending on the language skills acquired to date and the language skills required for the intended study or doctoral project; other additional benefits).

Application modalities (Deadline: 31.08.2026)

Application modalities (Deadline: 31.08.2026)

Potential candidates cannot apply for the scholarship program independently, but are nominated by the MLU (the IO takes over this task). To be eligible for the program, potential candidates must be able to prove or credibly demonstrate a threat to their personal well-being or safety (e.g. physical violence, arrest, denial of civil and educational rights, etc.) and

  • are in possession of educational certificates that allow access to a university and guarantee the completion of a desired degree program or research project according to the anabin database
  • are not resident in Germany or another EU country at the time of nomination

Important note from the DAAD: A multiple nomination does not bring any advantages. One nomination per candidate is sufficient.

Our DAAD award winner 2026

DAAD Prize for outstanding achievements by foreign students at German universities

Every year, the German Academic Exchange Service provides funding for an international student or doctoral student at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.

The DAAD prize is intended to honor special academic achievements and remarkable social or intercultural commitment.

Unserer DAAD-Preisträger 2026

Albert Arzumanian

Albert Arzumanian

Albert Arzumanian comes from an Armenian family who were forced to flee to Russia in the 1990s due to the war. The experience of starting afresh in a new country shaped him from an early age and inspired in him a desire to forge his own path through education. In 2021, this path led him to Germany.

Mr Arzumanian studied economic mathematics at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree and a grade of 1.7. He is currently studying for a Master’s degree in mathematics, with a grade point average of 1.5. His focus is on numerical mathematics and the development of mathematical models to describe complex systems. Alongside his studies, he worked for several years as a student assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute in the field of solar energy and photovoltaics. He is currently undertaking an internship in the field of artificial intelligence at a consultancy firm.

Alongside his studies, he volunteers at VfL Halle 1896, helping with childcare, and is involved in the International Office’s buddy programme, where he supports international students upon their arrival in Germany. Previously, he worked as an interpreter and volunteered as a German teacher for refugees. As a member of the Mathematics Students’ Council, he helps organise day-to-day student life and facilitates communication between students and lecturers. As part of the "Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft", he gave a public talk, together with a fellow student, on how modern artificial intelligence works.

We would like to acknowledge this outstanding commitment.

Congratulations and all the best for your future!
