The Studentenwerk Halle offers free legal advice provided by the lawyer Gabriele Huber-Schabel.

Topics such as tenancy law, loan law, consumer protection law and contract law, as well as questions regarding residence and immigration law, can be raised or discussed.

The free legal advice service supports students with legal queries and disputes. Lawyers explain the current legal situation, offer advice on how to proceed, and outline possible next steps.

Consultation hours take place every Thursday from 14:00 to 16:00 o'clock at the Student Council (StuRa) during term time. During the summer break, they take place every two weeks.

This service is available exclusively to members of the Student Union. As consultations may take some time, waiting times cannot be ruled out.

Students who find themselves in a temporary financial hardship may apply for financial support under certain conditions. The aim of this support is to help cover additional study-related costs and ensure academic success.

The support available includes:

• Financial grants for students in particular need to cover additional study-related costs, such as health insurance contributions.
• Grants for books and learning materials for students on low incomes. The grant amounts to up to 50 euros per semester.
• Free meals in the canteens for students in financial hardship. Following a successful application, free lunches may be provided for a limited period.

These benefits are awarded upon application and following an individual assessment of the applicant’s personal and financial circumstances. In addition, advisory services are available regarding student finance, social benefits and other support options.

The Sozialdarlehen (social loan) is paid out in the amount of up to €1500 (students with children can apply for up to €2500). The loan can be applied for from the StuRa social spokespersons.

In contrast to many private loans, the StuRa social loan is interest-free and repayment begins three months after the last payment has been received. You can decide whether the loan is paid out in one go or in several stages; however, the minimum amount is €30.

The aim of the “Haus” association,  founded in 1994, is to help international students of the Martin Luther University, who are in financial distress. Funds are collected from membership fees and donations. After verification of the student's situation, the financial help is administered at short notice and unbureaucratically, for example by temporary payment of rents, health insurance, and subsistence money prior to intermediate and final exams, etc.

The Protestant Students Congregation (Evangelische Studierendengemeinde - ESG) consults about and grants financial aid from emergency funds administered by the Diakonische Werk Mitteldeutschland, comprising resources of the campaign “Brot für die Welt” and of means from the “Smirnoff-Nachlass”. The allocation of these grants is limited to students who entered Germany freely (with a residence permit according to §16 a AufG) and is bound by special guidelines.

In financial and other emergencies, foreign students can find advice in the Protestant University and Students Congregation Halle (ESG). Student pastor Christiane Thiel and her team take the time to find solutions for the person seeking advice.

The Studentenwerk Halle is responsible for the conditions relating to studies. They offer affordable housing, food in canteens and cafeterias. They also have special programs for international students. The residence hall advising team consists of tutors who assist new students entering the country in getting started in the university.

We especially want to point out the wide range of consulting services. 'Studentenwerk' offers social counselling for international students, counselling appointments can also be offered in English, French or Arabic. If you have difficulties studying or personal problems, you can contact the psychosocial counselling service.

The Student Council at Martin Luther University (Stura) also offers a social advisory service providing specific information and support for international students.

The StuRa's website is only in German. However, you can contact the the Department of International Affairs, they'll be able to inform you further. 

If you need help with appointments or translations, please contact the Halle-Saalekreis Volunteer Agency. They arrange volunteer mentors and guides for refugees and immigrants. The service is straightforward and free of charge.

SiSA, a Network of Migrant Organisations in Saxony- Anhalt, offers free language support for international residents in Saxony-Anhalt. You can receive assistance with appointments at government offices, schools, advice centres or healthcare facilities – by phone, video call or in person.

As part of the ‘Hand in Hand’ project, Malteser supports Internationals by accompanying them to important appointments and providing translation services. This support is offered on a flexible basis by arrangement.

The team of language support workers at VeMo Halle, the Association of Migrant Organisations, assists migrants with appointments at the Jobcentre and the Youth Welfare Office.
